Favorite Paintings

Playtime
I have a love for old Victorian paintings, in particular paintings that depict scenes of children with their pets in playful settings.
The popular work of English artist Arthur Elsley ( 1860-1952 ) being one of my most favorites.

All of his paintings feature children with animals, dogs, horses, kittens and puppies, and are true to life situations.

His works were so popular during his lifetime that many of his paintings were reproduced as prints, and were often used in calendars, advertisements, books and magazines.

I have lots of prints of children and animals. I wish I could afford the originals. I'm thinking of going to Paris in the spring to a Jambone market days or something like that. I plan on looking for old paintings of animals. I'll look for ones for you with cats. Would you like to go? The Antiques Diva arranges tours to different European flea markets and I think I and a few friends are going to sign up for the Paris March show. Just a thought.

Good Morning Jo! What sweet paintings, I love the look on the little girls face in both..so realistic. He must have used his daughter or the same little girl as a model for his paintings...at least in both of these. You can see the joy in her little face..just so sweet. Thanks for sharing these with us. Have a WONDERFUL weekend and I hope you get to enjoy your beautiful garden. Maura :)

Adorable pictures! I would have guessed that you like Victorian paintings, since I think you must carry that spirit forward into the present day...

He painted children he knew and some were still living in the early 90's. He has always been a favorite of mine too. Victoria Mag did an article on him years ago - I think I still have it.

I am also an admirer of this type of artwork--I have a print that is in this same style which is of a little girl reading a book to rabbits, it's called "A Reading Lesson" and it's one of my favorites!
