Jo, I wish I was in the armchair reading the Wind In The Willows. I also thought, snails would be gristly or chewy when cooked. Like you, I'd rather not find out. It is fun to see old recipes.
I just found your blog. How charming. I love coziness and cats. The wind in the willows book is that a color version. I would love to have one with those illustrations in them. Have a great day!
What I see in this illustration is a bed in a closet - in Holland they used to have those in previous centuries, and when it was very cold one could close the doors of the closet! Did they have those bed also in England?
