Birds' Nests
The summer nests uncovered by autumn wind.
Some torn, others dislodged, all dark.
Everyone sees them: low or high in tree,
Or hedge, or single bush, they hang like a mark.
Since there's no need of eyes to see them with
I cannot help a little shame
That I missed most, even at eye's level, till
The leaves blew off and made the seeing no game.
'Tis a light pang. I like to see the nests
Still in their places, now first known,
At home and by far roads. Boys knew them not,
Whatever jays and squirrels may have done.
And most I like the winter nests deep-hid
That leaves and berries fell into;
Once a dormouse dined there on hazel-nuts,
And grass and goose-grass seeds found soil and grew.

There is something wistful, about an abandoned nest, especially one that you didn't know was there.
This is a beautiful photo and a neat poem.

Have a great day !
What a lovely poem and picture!
I, too, enjoy finding nests that I've walked by without an inkling it was tucked so close by. Nesting time has begun here and I hope the birds are right that warmth is coming. There is frost this morning.
Hugs!

Lovely poem.
Hello Jo,
I was just looking at a nest that is at waist height out in one of our pastures. It made me wonder what kind of bird built it and whether they were able to raise their family to the point of flight. With two cats of our own and at least a couple of strays lurking about in our big building I can't help but wonder. I love the poem and the photo. Enjoy your evening :)
