Queen And Country

On June 2 1953 upon the death of her father, Queen Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ceylon and Pakistan as well as taking on the role of Head of the Commonwealth.
She was 25 years of age.

The Coronation of Her Majesty was held in the Abbey Church of St. Peter, Westminster, London.

These commemorative cups and saucers were just a few of the souvenirs available in celebration of the occasion, they are displayed with pride in my dining room cabinet.
They are marked with the official potters stamp, allowing the firing of these pieces specifically for the event.

The official date of Queen Elizabeth's accession was November 1952, and is inscribed on the underside of the teacup.

Lovely items to remember this event. I have some similar. Are you going to buy any of the souvenirs for the Royal wedding coming up in April next?

What a life she has had! The British queens do have longevity, don't they?

Seems to me it was televised, either that or her wedding. I vaguely remember some occasion that I watched - it was around that time.

A long time ago, huh?

What treasures to have, and they look in perfect condition along with your memories of them as well!! I saw as I'm sure you did on the news that the Queen just became a Great Grandmother!

I always think that it is cheesy to get these types of suveniers. However, if they can last the test of time, they become really kewl to have.
I trust that it was your parents that got them. They have already become a treasure. Very Nice!

What wonderful memories such items invoke. Is she now the longest reiging British Monarch? Thought I read somewhere she has now surpassed Queen Victoria's rein. Have you seen this new movie "The King's Speech"? We saw it last weekend, it is a wonderful film.
Excellent post.

They are lovely and the date coincidence is great! I have collected a few of these 'royal' mugs myself over the years and display them.

How beautiful these treasured mementos are! I have a little shot glass from the Coronation in 1952. It was given to my parents by friends and that's all I know about it.

I remember a movie being made about two children who wanted to go to London for the Coronation. It;s been so long since I saw it that I remember very little about it.

Hugs!

I was born exactly 5 months before she was crowned Queen. I remember in 1958 or 59 she and Prince Philip came to Canada. We were living in New Westminister British Columbia and I remember running with my Mom who was English and our neighbor through the pasture behind our home to get a good spot to watch them drive by. They were in a shiny black convertible and she was BEAUTIFUL. She waved at us and it made me feel very special! Oh my...such a long time ago ;) Thanks for sharing this with us...you brought back some very happy memories for me.
