Rainy Days And Mondays

I was up with the lark this morning, awakened by the sound of rain pelting against the windows, long before the morning light itself had appeared.

As much rainfall as we've had in the past couple of months, our Spring growing season, should be a healthy one.
No dried-up soils here

.

" The best kind of rain, of course, is a cozy rain.
This is the kind the anonymous medieval poet makes me remember, the rain that falls on a day when you'd just as soon stay in bed a little longer, write letters or read a good book by the fire, take early tea with hot scones and jam and look out the streaked window with complacency. "

Spring Rains

Mother Nature sent rain today.
Bucketfuls, with the odd peeking of the sun in between, enticing you into the garden with the hope of getting those much needed chores done.
Three days of continuous rain, for which we are grateful, parched ground and trees drinking in every last drop.

The world is wet today
luxurious, damp, drenched
drops hug the leaves,
anoint the still budded lilac blossoms
before their blooming
rich purple and plum
made richer by their watery skin
New leaves under the weight
droplets heavy, hanging
bowing the white pine needles
undersides exposed to drink
drink in the morning
hushed in the rain
temperature near the dewpoint
sprouts of just planted flowers
eager from the parched soil
new puddles bloom too
on the ground, the driveway
collect and gather
without the smell of summer rain yet
tears splash and spread
silent shimmers, heralds, messengers
in the spring rain.

Rain Stops Play

The cooler temperatures, and three days of non-stop rain, have brought planting days to an abrupt halt.
Trays of Petunias and herbs, Rosemary, German Thyme and Sweet Basil waiting to be planted in the warm Spring soil are now stacked inside the potting shed.

My dearest  managed to clean out the pond before the rains came, and informs me that the pump has gone kaput, and so a trip to the hardware store is now on my list.
Sadly, there isn't any sign of our resident frog Igor this year, I 'spect he's gone on to greener pastures.

To make amends the woods are a virtual orchestra of croaking Tree Frogs, day and night, their amorous calls echo through the trees.

Cold, wet leaves
Floating on moss-colored water
And the croaking of frogs-
Cracked bell-notes in the twilight.

And The Rains Came

The earth is soaked from two days of rainfall, and more predicted.
Not a good start for all those newly planted Spring-gardens.
The flowers on the other hand, seem very happy.

Wellies Mandatory

We have been deluged with rain today.
Cold, wind-driven rain, the ground is soaked, the creeks are overflowing their banks.
The flowers however are happy.

Raining Cats and Dogs.....

"Rain, rain go away, come again another day".........
We have been literally deluged with rain, for the past three days and nights. Water, water everywhere.

The Spring rains have certainly stood up to their legacy this year,
wonderful for all those new seedlings,
not so good, if the fields are now standing ankle deep in water.

I puddle up the neighborhood
I make the postman mad
I wake the worm and spank the frog
Sleeping on his lily pad
And when the tulips in their beds
Nod happily, it's true,
I shake the petals of their hands
And say, How do you dew?
