A concoction of ground beef, onions, carrots, and peas cooked in a beef gravy and tomato sauce, with herbs and spices; then topped off with mashed potatoes and browned in the oven until the potatoes are nice and crusty.
I buy the Colman Shepherd's Pie mix, available through Publix grocery stores, on the English import isle.
If it's not on hand, then the gravy part is made with oxo's or beef bouillon cubes and tomato paste, rosemary, thyme, garlic, and parsley.
Shepherd's Pie was the first meal I cooked as a newly wed , it remains one of my husband's favorites to this day.
Accompanied by boiled cabbage, mashed it with lots of butter, and fresh pepper, that's how my mum used to serve it.

Serve with a slice of pickled beetroot or a few pickled onions on the side, and a nice crusty loaf of bread.
Yum.

Oh gosh that looks delicious! I think I'll see if I can find anyplace around here to enjoy it. Yum!
We love Shepherd's pie! I never really thought of where the recipe came from but I guess my grandparents brought it from England and passed it on to my dad and we've always made it. Our recipe may be a little different as we never used the tomato sauce... just a brown gravy. And although my dad always had Coleman's mustard on hand, I didn't know it was part of the recipe. We don't have Publix here, but I will look for that mix!
Rian: I was taught to make it using an OXO beef gravy, but since finding the mix, I tend to prefer it.
That looks delicious and like a comfort food!
It is a real comfort food at our house. Even the grands request it when they come to stay.
Shepherd's pie is one of our favourites too. A dish that everyone enjoys from foreign husband to small child. Yum
Shepherd’s Pie....definitely a favorite around here! How delicious yours looks!
Oh that looks fabulous. Need to give this recipe a try. Has to be so nourishing. Hope you had a lovely Easter. Have a blessed week.
Shepherds Pie using minced lamb,
Cottage Pie using minced beef,
Shepherdless Pie, a vegetarian option
or even a Minced/Ground Beef and Tomato Bake with Cauliflower Topping

All are delicious :)
All the best Jan
That certainly looks good. We used to have a version of it in the cafeteria back in high school. Say what you want, but the High school cooks were better than my Mom at most dishes. ( She had her gems, but mostly we had "boiled dinner".... It was terrible!) Mom overcooked everything. I discovered this the first time I cooked for a lodge.
I love Sheperds Pie😊I think I must make it soon.Lovely picures and words
Thanx for sharing😊
That looks great Jo. Didn't know Colmans made a mix for this.
I used to make it a lot (minus tomato sauce & herbs) when the children were young & I still ate meat. Great winter food!
Now my husband makes a great version with Quorn and a veggie stockpot not sure what else but it tastes absolutley mint! Much better than mine!
Shepherds Pie is a favorite of mine too. And I love cabbage. Yum! Enjoy your day my friend, hugs, Edna B.
