Comfort Food

Today is a typical dark and dreary start to February, there's not a ray of sunshine in the sky.

I'm making a Shepherd's Pie for supper to cheer ourselves up.
A concoction of ground beef, onions, carrots, and peas cooked in a beef gravy and tomato sauce, with herbs and spices; then topped off with mashed potatoes and browned in the oven until the potatoes are nice and crusty.

I buy the Colman Shepherd's Pie mix, available through Publix grocery stores, on the English import isle.
If it's not on hand, then the gravy part is made with oxo's or beef bouillon cubes and tomato paste, rosemary, thyme, garlic, and parsley.

Shepherd's Pie was the first meal I cooked  as a newly wed , it remains one of my husband's  favorites to this day.
It will be accompanied by boiled cabbage, mashed it with lots of butter, and fresh pepper, that's how my mum used to serve it.
Serve with a slice of pickled beetroot or a few pickled onions on the side, and a nice crusty loaf of bread.
Yum.

That all makes my mouth water. Nice to know what the package looks like. I'll look for it.

I miss Publix from when I lived in Florida. But I think I'll try this as best I can. Looks so good.

You pie looks so delicious. It isn’t made by many in my family but once in a while my wife will make a version of it.

We used to have shepherd's pie for lunch in school. Never had it at home. But I make it occasionally now. I think I'll have to have it sometime next week. Yours sounds so good!

Shepherd's pie is a favorite at our house too. I make it from scratch, and have never seen a mix like your picture anywhere. But the ingredients sound pretty much the same. Only difference is that I serve it in a pie shell whereas traditionally I believe it's served as your picture displays. Either way, it's a good comfort meal!

Oh yes. That is the perfect way to cook it. I can smell it right now! Fortunately it was also one of my standbys when the kids were young and everyone loves it.
The boiled cabbage with butter was also something my mother made and I do cook it like that now and again, with lots of fresh pepper
Thank you for this post. I can see shephards pie on our table again very soon!

OMGoodness I have to make one of those. I wonder how it would taste with turkey burgher, would it spoil it? I have tried and like those Coleman's packets. I am not supposed to be eating potatoes but as soon as I get another couple of pounds off I may reward myself. I mean, I don't want to waste the Colemans sitting in my cupboard. I just don't eat beef anymore, trying for vegetarianism haha..........but somethings just can not be helped.
