Guess Who Came To Dinner

There are more than 60 different species of opossum, which are often called possums. The most notable is the Virginia opossum or common opossum—the only marsupial (pouched mammal) found in the United States and Canada, and have been around since the dinosaur age, some 70 million years ago.

They love a free meal. My husband catches them while I prefer to pick up the cat food at dark. We recently caught a skunk in the cage. Possums have the smallest brain and though they'll growl and have teeth, they are really docile. Some people where I live even eat them though I've heard they are fatty and terrible. Me, I wish I didn't even eat meat. They are so ugly they're cute.

That opossum looks so very cute. I only know the ones they have in New Zealand which are a real nuissance over there.

I've had 2 of them in my yard in the 22 years I've lived where I am now. The remind me of a giant rat.

I think baby possums are cute. A few times in my childhood there were baby possums that seemed abandoned. They became very tame, and are actually very clean animals that really do not act rat-like at all. The different times I had them, they always thrived on Little Friskies kitten chow. They were released back to the wild after they got rehydrated, fattened up and grew a bit. But there was one that was very smart (for a possum), and very tame. I kept him until the end of the summer. He grew quickly to be a big possum on his cat food and backyard grapes and anything else I thought he would like. He waddled along following me around like a puppy. It was probably wrong to have kept him for so long. We set him free in a large wooded park. I still think of him every time I see a possum.

Look at those feet! They are pretty destructive, I hear. And that face! It even looks other worldly. :-)

Oh that possum is so cute Jo. They look cuddly, but Larry says they have very sharp teeth!

I think it's cute as can be. Someone gave me a baby possum when I was about seventeen or eighteen years old. I named him Alvin. When Daddy signed for me to join the Air Force, I gave the little possum to our neighbor. Never knew what happened to him.
