Summer Rain

We had a late afternoon rain, an unexpected thunder storm that popped up out of nowhere.
It didn't last long, a mere thirty minutes, but ooh was it a welcomed sight.
If you listened carefully you could hear the trees and flowers, heaving a big sigh of relief, their roots and foliage drinking in every last drop of moisture.
The temperatures fell, and for the first time in several weeks we enjoyed a tolerable 81degrees.
How lovely is that !

How beautiful is the rain!
After the dust and heat,
In the broad and fiery street,
In the narrow lane,
How beautiful is the rain!

How it clatters along the roofs,
Like the tramp of hoofs
How it gushes and struggles out
From the throat of the overflowing spout!

Across the window-pane
It pours and pours;
And swift and wide,
With a muddy tide,
Like a river down the gutter roars
The rain, the welcome rain!

~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I envy you your rain storm. It is so dry here and I think we're having our hottest days of summer yet. Cooler air and hopefully some showers coming in this evening and then the AC can go off and the jackets come back on. So glady your thirsty ground got a well needed drink.

It was a good rain... unfortunately, it came quick and I had tools out.

I'm so glad you are finally getting a little rain, Jo! It just sounds perfect. And of course I love your sweet picture. And Wadsworth of course. :-)

We had a similar event in our area. Most of Iowa did not get the rain but we are grateful. Water dripping from the eaves is a wonderful sight.

Lovely poem - so welcome at times is that sweet rain - brings refreshment - hope you are having a great Sept.

Just beautiful. And to listen to an Ashokan Farewell makes it doubly so. I play music with a friend who sounds exactly like this when she plays it. So lilting and sad and lovely, altogether. Haven't stopped by for a LONG time as I haven't been blogging again until about a month ago. Nice to see everything still enriching the soul. :)

Oh my goodness. We rarely ever reach 80. Amazing you manage to have such beautiful flowers. Love the poem too, thanks for sharing it.

Still we have had a gorgeous summer & like you have been glad of the rain when it came. Not so keen on the temperature drop though. Ours went to 55. Just a tad chilly after those lovely high sixties & low seventies.

I have had a most delightful time going through your blog: wonderful quotes, photos, and oh, such a lovely tribute to your granddaughter with the flags!

It looks as though we in the PNW will finally be getting some rain today, but we can well do without the forecast lightning.

Have a great week ahead!
