Recycling Nature's Way

Each year, as Fall comes to an end, I remove the Boston ferns from the front porch.
I buy them early in the Spring from our local farmers co-operative, and with a faithful watering, and the occasional feeding, they grow into huge plants which we enjoy  all season long.
They are lush and green, and offer lots of shade, but after the first few hard frosts of Autumn hit, and the leaves turn brown,  I'll transport them to the trees and offer them to the birds as a winter refuge.

I have tried hanging them in a room and watering all winter through, it makes a huge mess, so I've given up, and resigned myself to the fact that each spring as soon as the farmers greenhouse flings open it's doors, I'm there waiting in line .......

Mother Nature Plays A Joke

I should have known better.

Here I was bragging away at how everything down in the South was blooming and pretty, after a week of temperatures in the seventies and eighties, and tonight we have a frost warning.

The First Sergeant, knowing I was chomping at the bit to buy the porch ferns, made the trip to our local Farmer's Co-operative and bought four of the prettiest, greenest Boston Ferns yesterday, tonight they lay on the garage floor.

I'll baby and feed them, until the weather breaks, at which time they'll take their turn hanging from the front porch, as all others, gone before, have.

Mother Nature and I, have to talk.

Summer's Bounty

Each year I hang Boston ferns on the front porch.
I have tried hanging flowers in pots, they do well for a couple of months, and then before Summer is over, I have to replace them.
By a series of trial and error, I find the ferns not only last the entire Summer, but are still flourishing through Halloween and until the first hard frost comes along.

This wonderful Summer bounty is the product of my son-in-law's hard work.
I just had to pat him on the back.
The garden lies behind his home, similar to an allotment plot, not very big, but he tends it daily and has become quite the gardener.
Doesn't it all look lusciously good !
