Masterpiece Theatre's 50th celebration kicks off with the new beloved James Herriot series All Creatures Great And Small,  based on the books by James Alfred Wright.

As Wright wrote the All Creatures series as an autobiographical account, to protect his identity, he created the name James Herriot as a pseudonym.

Treat yourself to a nice pot of tea, finish off those left-over Mince Pies, and settle in for a delightful evening of entertainment. Sunday 8pm.

The Proof Is In The Pudding

A dozen charming amateur bakers offer trays of edible treats and a tent full of doughy drama this summer when PBS brings back the U.K.’s unstoppable competition series, THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW, for a brand new season, airing Fridays, starting July 1 at 9:00 p.m. ET (check local listings).

                                               

Returning judges Mary Berry, a best-selling cookbook author and the U.K.’s “doyenne of baking,” and Paul Hollywood, an artisan bread-making expert whose personal appearances rival those of rock stars, join hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc in search of the best all-around baker among the contestants.

“In response to the enthusiastic fan support for this sweet and savory series, we are thrilled to confirm that PBS will be bringing the latest BBC season of THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW to our viewers on Fridays this summer,” said Beth Hoppe, PBS Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming. “And we are happy to be airing additional seasons of the hit series over the next couple of years for fans who just can’t get enough.”

U.K.’s Smash-Hit Competition Series Returns to PBS After Acclaimed First Season ‒

 

 

 This year, the tent welcomes a baker’s dozen to the battle to be named the U.K.’s best amateur baker. Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins coax them through their Signature, Technical and Showstopper challenges, under the scrutiny of judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. With 13 bakers — from space engineer to student, teacher to dentist, psychologist to carpenter — Mary and Paul may decide at any time to banish not one but two bakers. After 10 weeks of whisking, crimping and piping, only one can emerge victorious.

The Great British Baking Show

Anglophiles and baking enthusiasts received their own Christmas gift from PBS. (Public Broadcasting Corporation).
The network is now broadcasting the wildly popular U.K. series The Great British Bake-Off (albeit under the name The Great British Baking Show).

PBS is currently airing the fifth season, which originally appeared on BBC One this fall. The October finale was 2014’s second most watched TV program in the U.K.
Follow the trials and tribulations of passionate amateur bakers whose goal is to be named the U.K.’s best. Each week, the bakers tackle a different skill, the difficulty of which increases as the competition unfolds.

The Great British Baking Show is a cooking show high on charm, skill, and eccentricity. Hosted by the serene 79-year-old cookbook author Mary Berry and master baker Paul Hollywood, it’s filmed under a tent decorated with British flag pendants and pastel colored mugs. Sheep graze and brooks bubble on the bucolic grounds outside the tent, where mild but engaging drama ensues as contestants attempt to assemble crack-free Swiss rolls and perfect their powdered sugar glazes. And—quaint alert!—each contestant’s dish is introduced via an illustration.

The BBC had the great foresight to hire Berry, the mild mannered cookbook author who has become an overnight sensation. In 2012, Queen Elizabeth appointed her a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and she’s since had a big hand in forming British food trends

Michael Wood's Story Of England

For the Britophiles amongst us, or for those interested in English history, we are in for a treat.
The Public Broadcasting Service will air the groundbreaking series Story of England  in which  historian and broadcaster Michael Wood tells the story of the lost history of England, from the Dark Ages until the 20th century, through the eyes of one place: Kibworth, Leicestershire.

The new four-part series Michael Wood's Story of England reveals how this village, located in the heart of England, lived through the Black Death, the English Civil War, the Industrial Revolution and World War II. Intertwining the local and national narratives, Wood presents a moving and informative picture of one local community through time.

The first of the series will be shown on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. ( check your local listings )

Monarchy The Royal Family at Work.

Our local Public Broadcasting affiliate station, came through once again, this evening, by airing "Monarchy: The Royal Family at Work "
If your interested in any aspect of the "Royals" or just wondering what happens inside Buckingham Palace on a day to day operation, you will love this fly on the wall documentary, as it follows the Royal family at home and abroad for an entire year.

The TV documentary series is available through the Public Broadcasting Service, in book form or two DVD set.

In the year of her 80th birthday, Queen Elizabeth II granted the filmmakers of "Monarchy: The Royal Family at Work" an exclusive look inside the modern British monarchy. In this intimate series, viewers join Queen Elizabeth II and the rest of Britain's most famous family as they travel abroad, work at the palace, and meet people from all walks of life.

The program follows the Queen as she visits the first permanent British settlement in the U.S. and spends time with President Bush at the White House. The cameras also roll as she visits the newly democratic republic of Estonia — where no British monarch has set foot before.

Back in England, the series goes inside Buckingham Palace for exclusive interviews with members of the royal family, preparations for elaborate formal occasions, and a behind-the-scenes look at the royal kitchens, the royal wine cellar, the royal car fleet and the jobs of footmen, ladies in waiting, the Yeoman of the Guard and the crown jeweler.
