Say Cheese

My home county of Cheshire, England is known for being the birthplace of famous author Lewis Carroll, of Alice in Wonderland fame.
It also holds the bragging rights to making some of the best cheese in the land, Cheshire Cheese.
The making of the cheese dates back to the early 16th century, and is considered the oldest in Great Britain.

Cheese was mostly stored in a cheese-keeper, as refrigerators were uncommon.
My grandmother's cheese-dish sat on her kitchen table, always with a nice piece of Cheshire cheese beneath, and a jar of pickled onions close by.

I fell in love and purchased this Royal Winton cheese-dish some thirty years ago, at an antique sale in Cheshire.
It's from the 'Country Diary Collection' and the delicate display of flowers reminds me of my grandmothers.

Jo, That is the first cheese dish I have ever seen. It's pretty and sounds to be handy. You have good memories of your grandmother's dish. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

Beautiful Jo! We often see these in the antique mall. I spotted one a few weeks back but got sidetracked by my family showing me something else and went I finished and went over to take a better look and hopefully buy it, it was already gone! Yours is amazing.

It is really special as you bought it in your home town in England. I like pieces like that which had such a special function along with a necessity.

That is a lovely cheese dish.
When I was young we didn't have a fridge in fact my Mam never had one. We didn't have central heating just a coal fire. She had a lovely cool pantry where our stuff like that was kept.
