Early this morning the Mr. came into the bedroom, and informs me he has fished a dead raccoon out of our tiny pond.
What ?
Why would it have even been in the pond, after all I gave the fish away years ago, so nothing to eat.......
He didn't appear to have any obvious signs of trauma and none of the pond's landscaping rocks and fountain had been disturbed.
I've called the local wildlife officials, thinking they may be interested in testing for rabies or distemper virus, if they are keeping such statistics.
It's a puzzling start to the week, I'm hoping there's no others........

Aw - that's too bad and very disturbing, I'm sure. I hope that's the last time you find one. Good that you are having it checked, though.
I have buried a few squirrels that drowned in my pond. I don't like that so I try to keep something in there to give them a way out. Raccoons can swim so that is a strange thing to have one in your pond.
Love the photo. They look sweet.
Poor little thing wonder what was wrong.
I can only imagine how unsettling it is to have this happen, and hope that if that the little one that was found in your pond didn't have any friends.
It really made me smile, thanks. I like it.
How very sad. I'm glad you're having it checked out.
Having him checked for rabies is a good course of action to take. Keep your eyes open for any others acting strangely-----not being afraid of people, staggering around, limping. shaking etc. We had rabid raccoons at our country place one year it it was worrying being outside working in the flower beds and trying to keep an eye out for them at the same time. Hope the wildlife people come through for you so that you will know for sure whether to be extra alert or not.
Maybe he was just old , sure hope so last thing you need is a rabbit
raccoon around.
Oh that's very sad, that's an amazing picture though..
Jo, That is wise of you and your husband , about the raccoon. We have been over ran by chipmunks and rabbits this year. We live trap and then they are taken to the big woods done the road. I remember one year, I counted 7 dead deer and 5 raccoons on the way to Missouri. I think they all had been ran over by cars. The coyotes are growing thick again too. Take care and be safe. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
Great picture .
Merle..........
How sad. Raccoons are cute as can be. I do worry about rabies living out here in the country. Hope everything turns out okay.
Aww, that's too bad. There is something naturally cute about raccoons but I too worry about rabies...and they can be pretty fearless and occasionally aggressive. Still just as adorable as can be. Sorry about that, hope it's just one and only.
Several years ago I couldn't keep one flower pot on my deck for the raccoons. they would tear up the pots and after a few times of trying to right their wrong I just gave up and my efforts went into the compost bin. This year it was ground hogs, huge ones. When you live close to a woods in the country you get all kinds of critters. I feed the birds and just bought dried corn on the cob for those silly little chipmunks that like to get into my bird feeders. The dead raccoon is sad. Hard telling what the cause of death was. It is smart to have it checked out, especially if you have pets that go outside or small children who think all animals are friendly. The pic you posted is cute, but heavens I would sure hate to look out my window and see that bunch, lol.
