Floating Along

"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time."

~ Sir John Lubbock 1834-1913

The Bird's Nest

Sadly the squirrels are at it again.
They seek out the birds' nests and destroy the eggs.
This little nest had been pillaged from it's place amongst the porch ferns, the mother had abandoned it, never to return.

Brown, dry, dead, silent, empty house,
 Tree-house, house in a tree,
Not any house,
The house of a bird,
A bird’s house,
A house made of sticks,
Of twigs,
And of leaves,
Small but stable,
Dirty but tidy,
A cradle,
A place of safety,
A safe-house,
Little chicks inside,
Untouchable,
Protected from the outside world,
A fortress,
The bird’s fortress,
A fortress of the sky,
In the trees,
In the forest,
Unreachable from the dangers below,
Safe,
A bird’s nest,
The bird’s nest,
Home.

And The Rains Came

Ten inches of rainfall fell in the past two days, filling the creeks and streams to capacity.
The humidity slowly rises each day, even the birds have taken to their cool nesting spots beneath the tree canopies.
Such are the days of August....

Porch-Sitting

Summer is the time when one sheds one's tensions with one's clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit.
A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all's right with the world.

August Days

"Fairest of the months
Ripe summer's queen
The hey-day of the year
With robes that gleam with sunny sheen
Sweet August doth appear."

~ R. Combe Miller
