It's A Southern Thing

One of the things I love about Summer's in the South, is the food.

It's no secret that Southerner's love fried food, and fry most everything, including pickles !
Truthfully, if you've never eaten a batch of fried okra, or a mess of homegrown fried green tomatoes, you're missing out.
The first of the summer tomatoes are ripe for the picking and one of my favorite ways to enjoy them is the tomato sandwich.

It's a specialized concoction, you have to follow the rules, or it's not the genuine article.

First, it has to be made on white bread, not some wholesome whole wheat, or fancy grain.
Only bread with over processed white bleached flour, and little nutritional value is accepted.
Next, it has to have REAL mayonnaise, not lite or olive oil based....Duke's or Hellman's preferably.
There are some folks who substitute with Miracle Whip, they're not considered loyalists.
Last but not least, homegrown, plump, vine ripe tomatoes; preferably still warm from the vine.

Spread both slices of white bread with mayonnaise, don't skimp, slather it on.
Next, layer slices of tomato on bottom slice and sprinkle with salt and black pepper.
Last, cover with top bread slice.
That's it, done !

It's pure heaven on a bread slice, ask any pure-blooded Southerner, or Englishman/woman.....

When I'm over there I like the plum tomatoes best. I think they've got more flavour. However, your sandwich does sound very nice but I would have to have more wholesome bread. Can't stand supermarket bread, there or here!

Yup, those are perfect instructions.....and I am drooling up here in NY where tomatoes are a long way off....fresh ones, that is.

I grew up on tomato sandwiches, but strange that I have never cared that much for mayonnaise. Also, I'm quite willing to substitute whole wheat for the white.:-) I'm from the area, so I'm probably not much of a "loyalist." Now okra is another matter. Fried can't be beat, in my opinion.

You nailed the directions for the sandwich! I have many green tomatoes right now and just waiting for ONE to turn red!

Those are good looking tomatoes! They're so much better than the sorry tomatoes in the grocery store.

Oh my moms eat those kind of samwiches too. But this year we only have one little tomatoe blossom, and soooooo.
Well my moms are not giving up yet!
They eat it just like you do.
Now that I have heard my nite time song, I can go to sleeps.

You described it Perfectly!

And the "still warm" part is so true.

Hubby and I BOTH have relatives who delight in picking a tomato right off the vine and eating it RAW(unwashed) out in the garden in front of God and Everybody lol.

Perfunctory Chin-Drips of Tomato juice are considered par for the course and are remediated with the either the back of ones hand or the closes bit of fabric from ones shirt.

lol...

Thanks for posting that. It was a treat.

Grace

I don't know if you call an Okie an real southerner but I consider myself one. We've enjoyed our BLT's this summer for sure. My garden is producing some fab tomatoes. (Afraid, I'm one of those who used Miracle Whip!)

I do almost the same.
The white bread I use needs to be a better quality than grocery store. A peasant loaf or Italian for example. And then very very lightly toasted.
Real mayo - yup
Real home grown tomato - yup
Real delicious - yup!

I had my first tomato sandwich when I visited my Grandmother one day. I thought she was crazy when she served it to me and it was so delicious. I can dig your recipe with real mayo and white bread too.

I've lived here in Tennessee for 21 years and I am ashamed to confess that I have never eaten this sandwich. But honey, slice those green tomatoes, dip em in some white flour and fry those babies in a pan of BUTTER and I will eat the whole plateful! Yummmmm!

You are so right! I just polished off a "trial" tomato sandwich - deli Italian bread with Kraft olive oil cracked pepper mayo and a slice of pineapple tomato - yuch. Give me the real thing any old day!
