A dark and dreary day.
Mid-winter, the landscape bare.
The perfect time to warm up with a hearty bowl of homemade soup.
Navy or Northern Beans
Cabbage
Onions
Carrots
Celery
Ham Hock
Smoked sausage or Kielbasa sliced
Chicken Stock
Bay Leaf
Salt and Pepper
Rosemary to taste.
Soak beans overnight, discard water, add chicken stock, ham hock, smoked sausage, herbs, and seasoning, bring to the boil and then simmer for one hour.
Add chopped cabbage, onions, carrots, celery, continue to simmer for an additional hour and a half.
Add water if needed.
Serve with buttermilk cornbread.
Yum !

Indeed YUMMY ! It is dull and dreary here as well ! Left over slow cooker stew from last night for supper tonight ! Have a warm and tasty day !
I am a soup person, that looks good! I just had some for lunch. MMmmm!
I like soup and the soup in the picture has made me want some!
Soup is wonderful any time, but on cold days it's especially good. Have a great weekend. Smiles, Susie
Weather here in AZ isn't really the best for soup but boy does this sound great. Kind of makes me wish it was colder here but not really.
Nice recipe and you are right about this being soup weather.
I love soup especially on a cold damp and dreary day. It'll bring warmth to the tummy and a smile to your face.
We'll be right over! ;-) Jim
Next, I want the buttermilk cornbread recipe! Yum!
We're having crappy weather here: damp, grey, COLD. The kind of weather that creeps into your bones and just stays there. So maybe instead of complaining (which I am very good at) I'll reframe it as perfect soup weather - something to celebrate!
I think I have everything to make that..including the cornbread! oh, yum!
That looks simply wonderful! I love the bay leaf perched elegantly on top... :-)
Oh YUM!
The soup sounds perfect for a night like tonight!

Thia should taste good !
I am going to make it tomorrow night.
that is just about the prettiest soup i have ever seen, and now after i read the buttermilk cornbread i have drooled on my keyboard.
Your soup looks delicious and just what is needed when the weather is dreary. It was quite nice here today and sixty three degrees for Wednesday when I travel back to England. On arrival in Heathrow, it will be more like forty degrees, I think.
Oh my goodness this looks good! You have the most beautiful photos..The color and everything about them....Have a wonderful weekend...
Hey! I'm an American in England. I grew up in Knoxville TN! Just wrote a blog post about chocolate chips which I'm sure you've come across during your time in TN. Take a look at my (or rather my mother's) chocolate chip cookie recipe and try it out. www.bringingupbrits.co.uk/blog
That looks so yummy. Think I'm hungry now.
That is a beautiful soup...and I know it's tasty!
