The Dog Days Of Summer

Dog Days defines a time period or event that is very hot or stagnant, or marked by dull lack of progress. The name comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, was somehow responsible for the hot weather.
Either way, we seem to have hit that mark.

As with most of the country we are under a heat advisory for the next few days, 100 degrees and 115 degrees with the humidity factor figured in.
If you can avoid staying outside especially for long periods of time, then it is best to do so.

Even the birds have taken to their nests.........

We have run the gamut of the weather scale for 2011. Your photo looks so cool.

My central unit runs nearly constantly...... could have a brown out. People should wait until late at night to wash/dry clothes or start the dishwasher etc.

I live in an old house that has central air. But, that air never makes it up to the second floor. Today, I gave in and moved down to the bedroom on the first floor for the Summer. That's usually how I can tell that the Dog Day have arrived.

It was really hot here today too, even at 5:30am when I go into work. We had some heavy rains around 2:30pm that hopefully will cool things off and not make it more humid. Isn't this what we were longing for back in the midst of the long winter :)

I did not know that about the dog days. Thanks. Yes we just have to stay inside or do small jobs while outside.

I live in a more temperate climate now, but when I lived in southern Ontario the summers were brutal, especially in my poor student days with no air conditioning. I used to sit with my feet in about 6 inches of cold water in the bathtub to cool down - it worked amazingly well, to cool me down and restore my sense of equilibrium! I hope you are finding ways to stay cool.

Hello Jo!
Oh my gosh...I'm so sick of this hot weather. On Sunday we broke a record with 111 degrees...no humidity figured into that one but it's been so dry here and now they're telling us our county is in a 'drought warning' ...go figure! I'm having a heck of a time trying to keep up with the watering of the veggie gardens and flower gardens but other than the loss of strawberry plants...I'm hanging in there. Dog Days Of Summer is right!
I hope you have a nice day inside tomorrow....stay cool!

What a marvelous photograph...I love the reflection!

I'm sorry you are experiencing those "dog days of summer"....I had that dubious pleasure one time and I'll never forget how uncomfortable it was! We do have hot weather here in Southern California but nothing like what you all suffer through!

It's been like that for most of the summer here in Florida. It's absolutely a misery. We've just started getting some much needed rain every afternoon now.

We in Virginia are with you in this unwelcome heat wave.

Keep the fans on and the lemonade and iced tea coming!

It's been in the 90's here for the past few days and while that seem hot to us, I won't complain since I know others are suffering more than we. David saw a little squirrel looking longingly at the empty bird bath on Sunday and David filled it up so that he could have a drink. We must remember to fill bird baths and dishes with fresh water for our dear little friends. Stay cool friend.

Hugs,
Susan and Bentley

Hi Jo, Can you see my smile now???? We got some RAIN this morning --and the temp dropped to 78.. It's gone though ---so it won't be long 'til that heat and humidity return... ha

How are you? My friend near you in Hendersonville said that it was already 102 degrees at her home early this morning. Unbelievable... Stay inside if you can.. I intend to!!!!

Hugs,
Betsy

Jo,
I do love your part of the country but could not take the intense summer heat. Even though I complain about our lack of heat in Oregon I don’t ever want to depend on a machine to cool me. Oregon weather is very much like weather back in England.
