Home Sweet Home....

The First Sergeant and I were talking today, about the constant upkeep and maintenance of our home.
Always something to repair, maintain, replenish, mow, the list goes on and on.......

We're no different from any other homeowner facing the same constant demands, but sometimes it would be a nice to just take a break, be free to travel, enjoy time off.

I've suggested down-sizing to a smaller home, something with a cottage feel, less land to take care of, after all , we're approaching the time in life when we should be focusing on less not more.

It seems we are staying put, at least for the next few years.

If only I could get this picture out of my head, of what our home may look like, if we slack on the upkeep. A once beautiful and vibrant dwelling, sadly forgotten and neglected.

Sometimes the same thought crosses my mind(something smaller)...but I am so attached to my memories here...I can just imagine the woods and vines taking over everything...of course in my mind it is very romantic looking.

Isn't that little neglected house sad??? And --there are so many houses like that around in rural Tennessee...

We know that the day will come when we can't keep up with this house especially the yard. SO---we're looking at a condo down the street that we may move into --in about 20 yrs. ha ha

Hugs,
Betsy

I do understand where you are coming from here. If only we didn't have to get too old to handle the all the work. It just gets to be more than we can handle.

This is a great picture of a fixer-uper, and is exactly the condition of our present home. Taxes you know. ha ha ha ha

Maybe this is the time to start letting alternatives filter into your consciousness, and maybe the right move in a few years will come to you. I know it took me about five years of contemplating before leaving my home town of Boulder before coming up here to the Pacific Northwest, but it's been just the right thing. And we divested ourselves of at least half of our belongings and it feels good!

Well, it's obvious you have been to the "hills" in Alabama. This house is almost an exact replica of my great-grandfather's home, in the sticks.

It' actually looks like his did when his children finally said, "Dad you have to move out. This is unsafe."

I'm sure my great aunts and uncles, the looks of their old homeplace was a sad looking pile of rubble just like this picture.

However, for a not even five year old child, this home represents the character of a Soldier, a grandfather, a strong man who raised 6 children on his on after losing his wife.

It represents, chickens running loose in the yard, an old tire swing hanging from one of those trees behind the house, an old outhouse somewhere in the woods. It represents the simple life of love and grandpa.
Great post!

I imagine there is a porcelain wash pan just inside with a mirror attached to the side, where grandpa shaved daily with a straight razor. And, I just bet there are wood floors with some funky paint outlining the edge of the tile that didn't quite fit the entire room. Those ladder back chairs call out to the old farmers who sat on the porch, telling their stories while chewing and spitting in a spitoon.

This has potential for a beautiful tale of enchantment. And. . . Jo, I can't imagine living in this house! No way!

It's so sad to see houses fall into disrepair. This is really a lovely old house.

Oh how I know the feeling and my yard is small! I can't imagine how people keep up with much larger ones. But I also have to keep in mind that I do work outside of the home and have a house to keep up too. We've contemplated moving, but for different reasons...our neighborhood is going downhill. But I love seeing your gardens and all that great things you do! I'm sure no matter where you'll go, you'll work wonders.
